NOTE:  DUST MASKS ARE MANTORY FOR ALL CARVING CLASSES
Learn the basics of power carving from a skilled carver and excellent instructor.  This all day class includes many carving techniques and also covers topics such as carving safety, types of tools and related equipment, and how to choose the right burs  for diffferent types of carving.  During the class, you will learn to carve sand ripples, basic relief carving, carving for stone and channel inlays, and faux basketry (if time permits). While you won't go home with a finished product, your gourd should be just about ready to paint and finish at home.  More importantly, you will have new knowledge and skills that are the basis for success in future carving project.

*  Instructor will provide handouts, patterns and some basic inlay supplies

*  Student to bring a gourd that is suitable for carving. Any shape is fine. Bring a power rotary tool, Dremel or other brand, and any burs and accessories you have on hand.  Suitable carving burs will be available for purchase at class.

*  Mandantory - a good quality dust mask or you may purchase one in class.

Have fun with dried cactus fiber.  A space will be carved out and the gourd finished with Alcohol
Dye Technique.  Then the fiber will be inlaid.  If you have a woodburner, you can burn a border around the carved area or you can carve a simple one.

*  Instructor will provide gourd, dyes, paints, Defp Lacquer spray, steel wool, sandpaper, cactus fiber, pencil and pen and class handouts.

* Students to bring Dremel-like rotary tool, burs such as inverted cone, large cylinder cutter, small ball cutter and a burr for smoothing the surface, such as a diamond wheel.  If you have structered tooth burs, bring them.  Optional is a woodburner and medium spear for burning lines.  There will be a lunch break during this class

Come and create this stunning basket weaving technique using warm wax.  You will, also, use wax for liner work.  Come prepared to have a great time and learn a wonderful new technique.  You will leave with a finished gourd that any artist will be proud of.

         GOURD RAIN STICK

This easy class allows you to be creative and make some music with your very own Rain Stick!

*  Instructor provide black paint, sinew or twine, tape measures, wire cutters and wire, hot glue guns, paper plates, gloves, spray sealer, and rain maker itms.

*  Students need to bring:
1.  A section of long gourd (sanke or caveman's club works well or even a penguin gourd)  Gourd should be cleaned, cut open at each end and cleaned out.  Gourd may be slightly curved, but no longer than 24 inches!  The larger one in the photo is 12 inches.
2.  10/0 Liner bursh
3.  Soft leather - enough to cover both ends with about 4 inches extra (for each end).
4.  Your choice of stain or paint.  Students may color before class, if desired.
5.  Beads and feather, if desired.

          Faux Finishing

Learn two finishing techiques that can be applied to the inside and outside of your gourds as well as your home decor.  It's time to make those gourd interiors as beautiful inside and out.  Two sample boards will be completed in this class by the student.  Students have the option os bringing thier own cleaned gourds to class to work on instead of sample boards.

*  Instructor will provide written instructions, sample boards and al materials needed to create the finishes.

*  Students need to bring a 1/2 inch to a 1 inch brush, no matter if you choose to use a smaple board or one of your gourds.  Students that would like to use a gourd must bring their own from home that has been cleaned inside and out.

In this class, you'll design a gourd using both crushed glass and "doodles" as a decorative effect.  You'll learn how to carve a recess for inlay, and will combine this with woodburned (or drawn) doodles in a fun composition.

*  Instructor will provide crushed glass inlay material,  basic dyes/coiling products.  written handout and doodle patterns

*  Students to bring a cleaned gourd.  (Any thickness, shape or size is fine - perhaps you'd llike to experiment and use this technique to embellish a mask or spirit doll. )  Bring a Dremel like tool and burs, and a woodburner.

Carving burs and dust masks will be availible for sale at class if you need them

Colored Pencil Application             on a Gourd

Students will learn how to apply colored pencil to a gourd using a ground product.  Sylvia brings her extensive experience as a colored pencil artist to her gourd art.  With the addtion of a ground which helps the pencil to adhere to the gourd, students will learn the process of applying colored pencil in layers to achieve a realistic looking horse or butterfly.  Students have the option of picking one of two patterns.

* Instructor will provide one container of ground medium, carbon paper and tracing paper.

Student to bring a clean, large gourd, colored pencils*, scissors, pencil sharpener (electric or battery is best) or manual.  Syliva will have small selection of pencils and shapeners available for purchase.

Put some zip in your coiing by adding Walnut slices.  This is a simple rim treatment and you should go home with a finished gourd.

       Autumn Leaves

Rim treatment not included in this class.

Learn a "fairly" fast and easy way to make this lovely autumn piece.  The colors on the leaves are done by using watercolor pencils, which are fun to use.  Students will place the design on their gourd so each will be an original.  Coiling will not be taught due to lack of time.  You will receive a detailed book with step-by-step instructions, as a reference tool.

*  Instructor will provide brushes, water containers, pens, water, paper towels, patterns, watercolor pencils and instructional books.

*  Students to bring a medium sized gourd.  Gourd shown is 22 inches in circumference.  Hellen says "I've done this style on medium pear goruds that I made into oil lamps, and they came out very nice."

Hellen's love of buffaloes shows in her technique of woodburning them.  Learn her technique for burning the short hair, as well as their longer, flowing hair.  Students will draw the SW scene and the ground on their piece.  This peice is fun and will teach you how to get depth in your woodburning.

*  Students to bring a cleaned gourd that has enough space to place a 7 3/4" x 6 1/4 " design, a face mask, woodburner and your favorite shading and outline nibs.

In this class you will learn how to design and carve a section of "filigree" into the gourd surface and will have the option of adding design elements such as butterflies, dragonflies, etc.  You'll try different carving methods and burs and should complete at least one large section in class.  (Other sections may be added as time and your own skill level permits.)

*  Instructor will provide a handout and patterns.

*  Students should bring a gourd that is reasonably thick for carving and is craft ready, inside and out.  If you want the inside painted, please do so before the class.  Students should, also, bring a Dremel, Foredom or other similar rotary tool and any burs you have on hand.  Suitable filigree and carving burs will be available for purchase at the class.  Items, such as riffler files, sanding sticks and a woodburner are helpful, but are not necessary.

      Beaded Knotless Netting

In this class, you will make a unique, beaded and encased gourd decoration using an ancient technique ordinarily seen in dreamcatchers.  Knotless netting is  also known by the name, Looping, and is basically a buttonhole stitch.  This is also a charming way to make a mini collector necklace.

*  Instructor will provide a kit with full instructions, needle, colored threads, colored beads, and charms.  A 4 x 3 inch gourd, included in the kit will be cleaned, colored and finished inside and out with a wax patina.

*  Student needs to bring scissors.

Explore the fun of pyrography basics while learning the art of feathers.  Creative lines and shading will be inclded in this woodburning class.  Any skill level of pyro or drawing will enjoy this approach.  Design your own feather gourd and walk away satified with your own creation.

*  Students should bring a woodburner with variable heat settings and various tips to include writing and skew or spear.

Western Leather Tooling Style

        Instructor:  Hellen Martin

Enjoy watching the leather tooling design develope while burning each step.  Learn how to countersink a rivet into the middle of the flower, burn shading in main locations tht ad depth and use water based lather dyes to add highlights and color.  Students will receive a 16 page instructional book with 29 photos. 

*  Instructor will provide water based dyes, brushes, rivets, nib cleaning supplies, water container, water, paper towels, drill and drill bits for countersinking rivets, paint pallets, pattern and instruction book.

*  Students to bring a cleaned gourd  that is large enough to place a 6 1/2  x 5 1/ inch design.  Also, a face mask, woodburner, and your favorite shading and outline nibs.

Here's your chance to learn about different types of clay, and to sculpt with two of the more popular types.  You will be provided with two different types of clay and will learn tips and trick for using them effectively.  We wil work on two different projects;  it is recommended that you birng two small gourds.  The photos shown are examples of the fiished projects, please note tht you will do the clay sculpting only (The painting or decorating may be compeleted at home after the clay has completely hardenend).

*  Instructor to provide two types of clay, a handout and patterns.

*  Student to bring two cleaned gourds.  One gourd should be cut opened and  cleeaned on the inside - any shape or  size is fine.  The second gourd (for the doll) should be left whole; pear shapes work best, but if you are creative or would prefer to make something other than  doll, you may try other shapes.  If you have small clay tools, please bring them, but tools will also be available for shared use.  Pleae bring a hobby knife and a pair of wire cutters and/or pliers.  If you want to wear gloves, please bring your own.  The clays are water cleanups.
Learn how to make these decorative gourd ornaments.  Using acryic paints, you will learn shading and how to make these little fun ornaments.  Chrismas is right around the corner, so in this class you will be painting a Santa or a Gingerbread face.  The painting technique can be used through out the year for other seasons or occasions.

*  Insructor will provide egg gourds, paints, some brushes, and all supplies necessary for you to complete your project.

*  Students are encouraged to bring their favorite brushes (flats, small round or liner).  and a water container for lceaning brushes.

It's a functional rattle - but it's also a mask you can hang on the wall!  Learn construction techniques for making these southwestern style rattles, then add your own touches to make the rattle into a decorative art piece.  Use your imagination and you can take the skills learned in this class to make other style masks, if southwestern is not your style.

You will be provided with a cleaned canteen gourd, a rattle handle and a small amount of embellishments.  Some additional embellishments will be available for purchase if desired. (You may also bring extra feathers or special embellishments of your choice to make your finished project unique.)  Basic water-based dyes and paints will be available for shared class use; if you have special products you prefer, please bring your own.

Suggested tools:  Bring a rotary tool and burs if you want to add carved designs.  Or, bring a woodburner - your method of decoration is up to you.  We will use a cordless drill with a 5/8", 1/2" and 1/4" drill bits.  I have some for shared use if you don't have these.

Learn how to emboss a design on a gourd, then learn to apply a leather rim by coiling from the top down.  Embossing is a nice alternative to woodburning.

You will choose between a candle holder and an oil lamp for this project.  You will learn the Alcohol Dye Tecnique and also how to apply a fun, new product on the gourd, in your choice of silver, gold or copper  or irredescent.  You should go home with a finished, gilded lamp.

*  Instructor will provide a gourd, alohol dyes, Deft Lacquer spray, Steel wool, foil, glue, paper towels  and  candle holder or oil insert.

*  Students to bring round brushes, No 4 and 6 and a heat gun or hair dryer.  Please note that this is a messy project, so please protect your clothing.

Learn the fun and easy way to do this piece.  You will pyrograph, carve and use paints to watercolor the roses and leaves.  That is a lot to learn in one class that you can then use on other pieces.

*  Students need to bring  a clean medium sized gourd with space for a 6 12/ H x 5 1/2 w inches design, Dremel type rotary tool, flex shaft and holder, if desired, burs - Tungsten 120 grit 1/8: pointed bur (Dura Grit Band)  and Ball 1/8: shank can be purchased  at www.arizonagourds.com.

           Round Braid Rim

Add interest to  your completed gourd by finishing the rim with leather lacing.  In this class, students will add leather lacing using the round braid (also known as Mexican Basket weave) to their already completed gourd.  Lacing should be completed in class.

*  Instructor will provide leather lacing, needle, and instruction booklet.

*  Students to bring sissor and a gourd, with a 4 - 5 inch diameter opening, finished inside and out.  Holes for lacing should be predrilled using a 1/8 inch drill bit, 1/4 inch from top and 3/8 inches apart.  Holes can be 1/4 to 3/8 inches wide (no larger than 3/8 inches).
