| Q:
How long does it take for gourds
to dry and how do you know when they are dry? A: Since gourds are about 90% water, it can take several months for them to fully dry out, depending on the size. It is usually best to let them dry on the vine. A good indication of a “mature and ready to pick gourd” is when the stem turns brown and the leaves die. Be sure to leave at least 2 inches of stem on the gourd when you cut it off the vine. If a gourd shrivels, throw it out. You will know if your gourd is completely dry and ready to work with when it is very light and you possibly can hear the seeds rattle. |

| Q:
What is the best way to dry a gourd? A: If you grow your own gourds, the easiest way to dry them is to just leave them on the vine until after a frost. In some areas, they are left out through December. Once the seeds are dry, a freeze won't hurt the gourd. When cut off the vine, put them on a rack where air can circulate around them. |
