Roy holds an art degree from Lamar University. He learned of gourd art after visiting gourd artists while on vacation in the Southwest.
Roy’s interest in art started at an early age. He received an art scholarship to Lee Jr. College but after one year, college was put on hold while he spent four years in the Air Force. Roy resumed college and graduated with an Art Degree from Lamar University. Roy’s career took a turn into sales and he spent the next 30+ years in corporate America. After retirement, he pursued his interest in pen and ink drawing which was dormant during his working career and begin drawing local historic landmarks. With his new found passion for gourds, he turned his pen and ink drawing skills into pyrography (fire drawing) on gourds. Gourds are now Roy’s new canvases.
Roy’s interest in gourds started with the planting of some seeds given to him by his daughter. These seeds turned out to be White Pumpkins and Gourds. The gourds flourished and took over their garden. After they dried, he made painted bird houses and sold them at the local arts and craft show. During a vacation to the Southwest, he visited with some gourd artists. This peaked his interest and with research, he discovered the world of gourd art.
His work has been featured in several magazines and newspapers. He has received awards as follows:
